An HR Director, a Lawyer, a Vicar and a Charity Exec walked into a room…

Salt & Light Newsletter: Issue 8

July 28th 2026

Hi there, this is Jon & Mark from Salt & Light.

Quick question: when did you last spend a full day just getting better at deciding?

Not a strategy offsite, or a business review, or back-to-back Teams meetings but a development day built around the thing you do more than anything else as a leader: deciding.

In June we had HR Directors from Construction, Senior Leaders from Pharma, an IT Consultant, a Lawyer, a Vicar, a Charity COO and a number of Leadership Consultants and Coaches all in the same room. None of them would normally meet, let alone work through real decisions side by side. By 5pm they had.

Here's why we keep running this.

91% of leaders think they're above-average decision-makers; 85% have never had a single hour of formal training in it. Bain found a 95% correlation between how well a leader decides and how well their organisation performs financially. At Board level, only 6% of directors rate their own decision-making as highly effective.

Six percent!

We think your leadership shows up most clearly in your decisions, not your job title, not your strategy deck; but your choices, and how you make them. So, we built a day for exactly that: slowing down, thinking properly, deciding well, with people sharp enough to challenge your thinking rather than just nod along.

One delegate put it better than we could:

"I experienced unexpected value in the opportunity to learn from leaders facing very different challenges but wrestling with remarkably similar questions."

We keep numbers small, 15 delegates maximum, because the whole point is real conversation, not a lecture with a Q&A bolted on. You'll get your own Decision Styles Profile beforehand, a one-to-one to prepare, and a proper two-course lunch on the day; not a sandwich at your desk.
